Case 162: 94 Year Old Escapes Bilateral Leg Amputations and Dependence on Nursing Home Staff for All of Her Needs

At age 94, this obese woman had developed ischemic lesions of both feet over a three month period. Her cardiologist and family doctor hospitalized her for an arteriogram which showed a stenotic left popliteal and no runoff in the tibial arteries in either leg. The left popliteal was dilated without benefit and, bedridden, she was transferred to a nearby nursing home to await her fate.

Boot therapy was available in the nursing home and was requested. The necrotic areas of her toes autoamputated and eventually healed. She was able to move about her living quarters. She died on June 15, 1990 with her legs intact... having had their use an additional 4.48% of her life.

Comments: She would have been spared pain and suffering had she been referred for therapy three months earlier.
